FAQs

Know Your Rights. Protect Your Credit. Take Back Control.

What should I do if my credit report has errors ?

Start by requesting free copies of your reports from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion at AnnualCreditReport.com.

If you spot false information — such as accounts you don’t recognize, wrong balances, or outdated debts — dispute them in writing with each bureau.

Keep copies of everything. If the bureaus fail to fix those errors within 30 days, you may have the right to sue under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) for damages and attorney’s fees.

At Story Law Group, we can guide you through this process — and step in if the bureaus ignore your rights.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) is the main federal law that protects you. It requires credit bureaus and furnishers (like banks or lenders) to report information accurately and correct errors promptly.

When they don’t, you can recover:

Actual damages (financial loss or emotional distress)

Statutory damages (up to $1,000 per violation)

Attorneys’ fees and costs

Other laws we use to protect clients include:

Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA)

Consumer Financial Protection Act (CFPA)

Identity Theft Enforcement & Restitution Act

If you’ve disputed errors with Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion and they failed to fix them, or if inaccurate information caused you to be denied credit, employment, housing, or insurance, you may have a case.

Even emotional harm — like anxiety or sleeplessness due to a false report — can qualify as damages.

We’ll review your situation free of charge and tell you honestly whether your case qualifies under the law.

Nothing upfront.

Your initial consultation and case review are free, and we work entirely on a contingency-fee basis — meaning we don’t get paid unless we win or settle your case.

That’s how confident we are in our ability to help.

Common FCRA violations include:

Reporting accounts that belong to someone else (“mixed file”)

Failing to remove outdated negative information

Listing debts that were already paid or discharged in bankruptcy

Reporting fraudulent accounts after identity theft

Refusing to correct errors after receiving dispute letters

If any of these sound familiar, you may have a strong case for compensation and correction.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) protects you from abusive collection practices such as:

Repeated or threatening calls

Misleading statements about what you owe

Contacting your workplace or family

Trying to collect a debt you don’t owe

Our firm can make the calls stop — and hold collectors accountable for every violation.

Absolutely.

We help clients remove fraudulent accounts, correct mixed files, and restore their credit after identity theft.

We can also file lawsuits against companies or bureaus that fail to act on fraud alerts or mishandle your personal data.

Not at all.

We represent clients throughout Florida and beyond via secure video meetings, phone calls, and electronic document exchange.

You’ll receive the same personal service whether you live in Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa, or Tallahassee.

It depends on the facts and the bureau’s response.

Some disputes are resolved in a few months; others require litigation that can last six months to a year.

We’ll give you a realistic timeline during your free consultation and keep you informed every step of the way.

Because consumer protection isn’t just what we do — it’s who we are.
